Here we are again; being told that we have to stay at home and everything is locked down. This has begun to take a toll on us mentally, physically, and even spiritually which is why I would like to introduce to you a simple, inexpensive way to repair your mind, body, and soul…..
WALKING!
Physical activity doesn’t need to be complicated, nor does it need to be something you want to avoid. Something as simple as a daily brisk walk can help you live a healthier life, so if you have been thinking about adding more physical activity to your day, walking can be a great way to get more active.
It is easy to see why walking is a popular physical activity among adults. It requires no special clothes or equipment, and best of all it’s FREE!.
Repeated studies have shown that a brisk walk can help you
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes
- Strengthen your bones and muscles
- Improve your mood
- Improve your balance and coordination
What is important to note is that the faster, farther, and more frequently you walk, the greater the benefits.
Standford University did a study in 2014 study that showed daily walking can actually increase your creativity by an average of 60 percent. Walking can allow your mind to wander and opens it up to the flow of ideas. What you are doing is exercising your mind as you walk, and this has the potential of making you a better problem solver.
Another study that was conducted in Kyoto, Japan found that after three months of regular walking, both men and women had an overall better cognitive function. Some say that a 10-minute walk can relieve as much anxiety as a 45-minute gym session.
How about the direct effects that it has on your body? Regular moderate to vigorous walking can regulate hormones like insulin, estrogen, testosterone, and adiponectin (an anti-inflammatory linked to regulating metabolism), and studies also show that one of the benefits of regularly walking is that it strengthens your immune system. Isn’t that what we want to be doing now anyway?
Now that you understand the benefits, and just how easy it can be to get out of the covid-19 slump, let’s get you started with some quick tips.
Prepare yourself for your Walk
It is advisable that you take your time to prepare for your walking adventure. Be sure to choose shoes with proper arch support, a firm heel, and thick flexible soles to cushion your feet and absorb shock. Be mindful of weather conditions, and wear comfortable clothes and gear appropriate for various types of weather. I would never advise it, but If you walk outdoors when it’s dark, wear bright colors or reflective tape for visibility.
Where am I going to go Walking?
Mall walkers have fewer precautions that they have to take, but if you will be walking outdoors, avoid paths with cracked sidewalks, potholes, low-hanging limbs, or uneven turf.
You don’t have to do it alone
If you don’t like walking alone, ask a friend, family member or neighbor to join you. If you’re energized by groups, join a health club or walking group. You might like listening to music while you walk, but be careful to pay attention if you are crossing the street. We would not want any accidents.
Switch up your walking routine
If you walk outdoors, plan several different routes for variety. Safety first! If you’re walking alone, tell someone which route you’re taking, and walk in safe, well-lit locations.
Alright, alright! Enough reading. Go strap on your sneakers and walk yourself into a healthier, more creative, and better version of you
